After just one chapter, I could tell this book was going to be different. I’m so used to reading stories told from the characters’ perspectives, but this one feels like you’re on the outside looking in rather than fully immersed in their world.
After a few chapters—and adjusting to the writing style—I started to really enjoy the story. Chapter 6 is a 10/10 on the spice scale! I can’t blame Eva for forgetting she saw a seven-foot red demon with bat wings and horns after the best night of her life. Honestly, would it even matter after a night like that?
Eva is a badass FMC. She gets hell in a handbasket thrown at her, her entire life flipped upside down, yet she manages to keep her emotions in check and avoid a total meltdown… something I definitely couldn’t promise for myself. With everything happening— the Hunter, the Hellgate, the demon history lesson, and her dad—she still manages to pull real feelings out of Ash and make him realize he wants a relationship, not just a quick hit-it-and-run.
One part I really liked was when Eva had to face her fear and confront the reality of what Ash is. She asked him to show his true form, and even though it terrified her, it didn’t stop her from pursuing a relationship with him. If anything, it made their connection stronger.
The end of Chapter 23 is a major WTF moment I did not see coming. It made me want to grab some popcorn and keep reading, and it also made earlier events click into place.
Overall, I liked this book. It held my attention, but I’m not sure I’m ready to jump into the next one in the series. It had spice and an interesting storyline, but the writing style just isn’t what I’m used to.
Spice: 7/10 Overall Rating: 6/10
